What makes for a great location?

Wow do I get this question a lot. I seriously get a lot of clients who are so lost on what location is a good one and how they find their perfect location. Hopefully this article will be beyond helpful! The location isn’t as big of a deal as the vibe the location has. I say vibe because I’m not sure how else to describe what kind of feelings the location gives off. For example; a rural location gives off a casual and relaxed look. Then there’s urban location which represents a fancier and more polished vibe/look. When I ask my clients what they’re looking for and what they want to wear and can really help myself and them narrow down a location that’s right for them. It’s important that you don’t compromise anything for your senior photos. Here are the 3 tips that make for a great location just for you.

  • It matches your vibe

As I said above the vibe is super important. It's all about what you want. I personally believe that there aren’t a ton of difference between different urban locations, but there are differences between urban and rural. It’s a clear difference. I think that most professional photographers offer multiple locations in their sessions, so obviously you can go from urban to rural and back again, but just make sure you understand the difference. Each location will be super different and it depends on what you want to emulate in your senior photos.

  • It represents the season

We’re so lucky to live in the Willamette Valley area where we get 4 distinct seasons. Generally seniors know exactly what colors they want in their session. Summer is bright yellows, greens, and tans. While Fall is clearly more orange and red. I just wouldn’t want you to pick a location for your dream seniors in the fall and go to a place that doesn’t really have any trees and you can’t really tell what season it is. IT JUST WOULDN’T BE RIGHT!

  • It has amazing variety

You’re probably like wtf I’m so confused. Don’t be! I am here to help. I simply mean pick a location that has tons of different places to take photos. I don’t necessarily mean pick a place that has 7 walls with different background colors for all. I mean pick a place with a bunch of different trees or maybe a place with trees, a wheat field, and tons of flowers. If you can find a place like this with a ton of different places within one place then guess what you’ve hit the location jackpot. You have without a doubt found a great location so that you’re worried about driving to different places but this means that you will still get photos that make it look like you spent the whole day driving around looking for the most perfect separate locations.

Honestly I get asked about locations a bunch. I know that it’s hard for me to help pick a location for someone when I don’t really know what they’re looking for. The best thing you can do is a quick search using these 3 things to help your photography narrow down the best place for your senior pictures. It’s so important to be open and honest so that you’re getting exactly what you’re looking for! I hope that this helps you and if you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out.
