What you need to know about a Downtown Senior Photoshoot

Hi everyone! Thank you all for following along with all my blogs and genuinely taking my advice to heart. I really hope it’s helping you all! Also, happy Thursday! This is really becoming one of my favorite days of the week. Okay, so I think that this is basically the next step you take when you’re working towards planning for your senior pictures. It’s becoming a super popular trend to take your senior photos downtown. I honestly love the downtown and urban look just as much as I love those open wheat fields. The urban look is great in your small town or in big bag Portland, Oregon. When you’re considering a downtown Portland photoshoot you need to know a couple of things. Personally, I think that this would apply to many different cities, but since I’m the most familiar with Portland then those are where my examples are coming from. Feel free to read this with your city in mind.

Here is what you need to know to prepare yourself for a senior shoot. I’m super against going into a situation without knowing everything about it. Knowledge is power. If you know what you’re looking for ahead of time then you can pick between a rural or urban setting for your senior session.

  • Be aware of how crowded it can be.

Senior sessions are supposed to be all about you. But, when you do a modern and rural shoot then you need to realize that there will be lots of people around. It might be a lot of sitting and waiting for people to pass by so we don’t get them in the pictures. It’s just meant for someone who is pretty patient and willing to wait to get the perfect picture. If you’re not super willing to wait around but you’re also really wanting to take senior pictures downtown then make sure that you book a session during a weekday. If you can wait for a weekday then sidewalks will be less crowded. You’ll be less likely to have to wait.

  • It might not be as colorful.

I LOVE color. I love playing with colors during senior photos. As most of you know when you go downtown, especially in downtown Portland you’ll notice it’s usually full of grey buildings and brick walls. While I love the look it’s not always everyone’s favorite. While I think that we’re lucky to live in a place like Portland where you can always find green even downtown, you aren’t always that lucky and get stuck with the same colors. To combat this you should wear super bright and colorful outfits so you can still reveal the colors.

  • You’ll probably end up with edgier images.

Most professional photographers when they think downtown think super edgy photos when they think a downtown senior shoot. Maybe, that’s not what you’re looking for. This is where you should start setting expectations with your photographer. If you want that modern, edgy, downtown look then communicate that to your photographer. If you want to have a more peppy and exciting downtown shoot then you need to ask your photographer for maybe a place near a park and a modern location. This way you can get those soft images as well as the edgy ones. It’s all about communication and setting expectations with your photographer ahead of time. That way when it’s time to shoot you don’t have to worry about getting the images you want.

Honestly, I love urban shoots. I also really love downtown Portland so any time that I can spend time photographing downtown I am all for it. With that being said, it’s not for everyone. It’s not everyone's idea of a dream senior shoot. I just hope that this little blog can help you decide what’s best for you.
